Witches Gulch is located in the Wisconsin Dells and is named for
its cool mystical environment. The gulch has a 5 to 10 degree
temperature drop from the Wisconsin River. The canyon has rock
formations known as the Witches Bathtub and Spooky Lane along
with a rushing trout stream under a walkway. Before it was
improved in the late 1800's, no one had ever gone into Witches
Gulch. The narrow space was filled with broken branches and
trees.
H.H. Bennett, world-renowned photographer, tried to explore
Witches Gulch, but the fallen trees and a big waterfall blocked
the way. He came back in the winter, by skating up the river.
According to the legend, H.H. Bennett cut an icy staircase into the
frozen stream and made his way into Witches Gulch. Bennett
thought Witches Gulch was so beautiful that he and a steamboat
captain built walk ways through it in 1875. Since then, Witches
Gulch has been a regular Wisconsin Dells attraction.
